Eye Exam Technology

At Complete EyeCare Optometry we provide a great range of technologies to best examine your eyes for eye disease, binocular vision problems, and refractive problems (for glasses and/or contact lenses).

The equipment used by our front staff in our pre-testing room is computerized and is equipped with the latest technology.

At Complete EyeCare Optometry we provide a great range of modern technologies to best examine your eyes for eye disease, binocular vision problems, and refractive problems (for glasses and/or contact lenses).
The equipment used by our front staff in our pre-testing room is computerized and does the following things:
  1. The NCT measures the intraocular pressure (IOP) which is a screening test for glaucoma among other things.

  2. The autorefractor measures the curvature of your corneas (important in fitting contact lenses and sometimes in diagnosing corneal disease).

  3. The autorefractor also estimates your refractive error (an objective estimation of what your eyeglass prescription may be). Your doctor of optometry requires other refractive testing (both objective and subjective) before a final prescription can be written.

  4. Our Panoramic 200 instrument is cutting edge technology. For those patients who choose our technologically enhanced eye exam, the P200 scans the back of the eye to produce an optomap which can show the doctor in one image up to 80% of your retina. This helps the doctors find and diagnose eye disease earlier for better treatment. In the exam room the doctor will review your optomaps with you in order to help guide your eye health examination and to educate you on any eye health issues that may arise. Our doctors advise this enhanced exam for all patients age 5 and up.
In the doctor’s examination room, he or she utilizes a variety of specialized equipment. The phoroptor is an instrument that greatly aids in the determination of your spectacle prescription. The microscope (slit-lamp biomicroscope) is used to assess how healthy your eyes are (both inside and out) and to assess contact lens fits. There are also hand held and headset instruments which allow for thorough evaluation of the back of the eyes (retina). Dilation with eye drops is often required. The optomap images are also very helpful for the doctor to detect eye disease and show you what’s wrong. Binocular vision and eye coordination is also tested during the exam.
Additionally, there are other tests/procedures the doctor may recommend after the eye exam. These include visual field testing, retinal photography (different from the optomap) and pachymetry.
Visual field testing is an automated, computerized instrument that tests the sensitivity of various points in your peripheral vision. This is useful when looking for glaucoma, pituitary tumors, visual field loss from strokes and many other situations.
Retinal photography involves taking digital pictures of the inside of the eye with a specialized camera. These photos are linked in the computer with your file and are used as a baseline comparison with the way your retinas look on future visits. In this way, subtle changes over time with the retina and optic nerve head can be more easily discovered and assessed. This is useful with diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other retinal, vascular or optic nerve head conditions. This differs from the optomap which scans a much greater area of the retina and is more screening/diagnostic in nature.
Pachymetry is used to measure the thickness of your cornea. This allows calibration of the intraocular pressure. Your doctor will decide when this test is appropriate.
As technology improves, our ability to detect and monitor eye disease/conditions is enhanced. At Complete EyeCare Optometry we are committed to providing you (our patients) the benefit of new technologies in eye care. We pride ourselves in not only being thorough but also providing you with all the information and explanations needed to fully understand your eyes and eye conditions.
